The Cave of Ātman (2014)

Role: Game designer, artist

After a 10 year break from game development, I worked on The Cave of Ātman with my brother, Chris, and my games analysis mate, Hayden. I took the Burning Aura mechanic from Jean d’Arc (PSP), tweaked a few properties, and turned it into its own puzzle game. This is the first time I’ve done sprite work. The Wario Land 3 Exploration Simulation is a simple Twine game that I used to demonstrate the problems with Wario Land 3‘s exploration gameplay. You can read more about it in Adventures in Games Analysis: Volume I.

A Video Game in Twine

Year: 2013
Role: Game designer

A Video Game in Twine developed from my interest in the Twine development community. I noticed that several Twine developers were labelling their interactive narratives as games when, at least according to my definition (“interactive challenges of skill”) weren’t. This lead me to attempt my own Twine game. I discuss the results in Adventures in Games Analysis: Volume I.

Classroom Games

Year: 2010-present
Role: Game designer, teacher

As an adult trainer and ESL teacher, I’ve designed hundreds of unique classroom games. I cover all areas of language learning, including phonics, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, speaking, fluency, communication skills, and cultural understanding. In Adventures in Games Analysis: Volume I, I share twenty-four of my favourite games.

Pollution Solution

Year: 2004
Role: Game designer, programmer, artist

Pollution Solution is an educational game about protecting the environment. I did programming, game design, and all of the graphic design for this game. The game came about through an extra curricula program at school where students start their own business and sell a product. We released Pollution Solution physically, selling copies locally at shopping centres and community stalls. I’m most proud of the game’s production, variety, and length.

In high school my brother and I learnt how to make games in Flash MX with the help of Gary Rosenzweig’s Macromedia Flash MX: Actionscript for Fun and Games. Although I managed to make all the games in the book, my files are a bit unorganised, so the link above is a compilation of my brother’s games.
