Dan once you've finished with Ikaruga you should check out Bookworm Adventures Deluxe. It's a mighty fine game and worth a look. I'm not kiding either I think it's a great game despite obviously targetted towards children.

Hey Korey, thanks for dropping by. You've got a great blog there, I've enjoyed reading some of the latest articles.

I think that varying up your tastes for all media is very important because it can allow you to discover great content which you normally might have overlooked.

Although I am new to shmps I think that Ikaruga is a great place to start. If you want to broaden your tastes then do what I did and write a list of games, genres, developers that you have heard about and are interested in fidning out more about them.

For me my list went something like this:

2D Fighting Games
Shoot 'em Ups
Nippon Ich
Treasure
SNK
Casual Games
Indie Games

And then some particular standout titles.

I really like that you're trying to branch out into niche games. I'd like to do more of that myself. I think it's very easy to just buy and play the types of games you're most comfortable and familiar with. Myself, I rarely venture into faster paced genres like shoot-em-ups, FPSs, or really intense 3rd person action games (like Ninja Gaiden). I think it's important to be able to play and appreciate other game genres, even if they're not your cup of tea. I've read about Ikaruga quite a bit, but have never played it. After reading your post, I wouldn't mind checking it out sometime.
